For those of you enjoying the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday - remember when this wasn't even a holiday? Do you ever wonder why they made it a government holiday?

Re: MLK day
Mon, January 19, 2004 - 5:45 AMI'm enjoying my day off in honor of Martin Luther King... do I know why they made it an official holiday.... sadly no. But I do happen to remember when he died and the funeral... I was almost 8 yrs old and out of school with chickenpox when it happened. The procession was carried on television and was very moving. I've also actually been the the museum in Atlanta. Interesting place to go. Personally, I'm just thankful that we have a day to honor a person who advocated non-violent protest of government and traditions.

Re: MLK day
Mon, January 19, 2004 - 6:20 AMI was only 2 years old when Dr. King was assasinated but of course I know who he was and keep his dreams alive in my heart. He was a strong and determined leader following God's word and his heart. It never crossed my mind as to why they made his birthday a government holiday but it took them long enough didn't it? They shouldv'e done this 40 years ago but that's just my opinion. He was a beautiful soul :o) -

Re: MLK day
Tue, January 20, 2004 - 3:59 AMYesterday, MLK Day .... I went to pick Bing up from work (it's one of those strange holidays that those of us in the financial industry get to enjoy a day off on) and as I was waiting for him, listening to the radio, I got to hear the entire "I Have a Dream" speech (set to music... I can hear the song but cant' remember the name of it). It was beautiful. I've heard that speech countless times, and yet each time I hear something different and it gives me goosebumps. What an amazing man he was ... and what a legacy he left us. -

Re: MLK day
Wed, January 21, 2004 - 5:53 AMI remember when they were lobbying to make his birthday a holiday and Arizona was one of the last to support it - it was a huge mess and a bad public relations move by the governor at the time.
Dr. King's dream continues to be one that so many of us share - hopefully, it will get more voice and press than it is currently. Did anyone see the photo-op that President Bush went for on the 15th? Laying the wreath on King's grave? Ugh. This man disturbs me. -

Re: MLK day
Fri, January 23, 2004 - 8:49 AMBush frightens me for many reasons. I also found his photo-op at MLK's grave disturbing as well. Here is a president who clearly has no interest in the welfare of the people of this country, a man who is squarely focused on his personal agenda, laying a wreath to honor a man who cared very much about the people of this country; it seemed so hypocritical, the irony was not lost on me. -

Sat, January 24, 2004 - 4:07 PMWhat's even scarier is that there are people who aren't quite "awake" yet who simply see this stuff, this posturing for the cameras, and they buy it! -
